Before beginning, make sure to set a prayer space for your family gatherings. Set a space that encourages the family to sit close together so that it’s easier to have meaningful conversations and prayer time as a family. It’s a good idea to have sacramental objects out, such as, rosaries, holy water, medals, statues, images of Jesus and the Virgin Mary, Bible, Cross, etc.
Family Time:
Today we will learn how to get ready to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We will learn that we meet Jesus in the sacrament.
Opening Prayer:
Before beginning prayer, take time to explain to your child that opening prayer will include some silence. Part of our relationship with God is taking time to listen. Giving our children moments of silence in this noisy world is a gift.
(Together, make the sign of the Cross)
In the name of the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Parent: Let us close our eyes, take a deep breath and as a family spend a few moments in silence.
(Silence)
Parent (when ready):
Together, let us pray to Mother Mary for her intercession as we work on this lesson:
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed are thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at
the hour of our death. Amen.
(Together, make the sign of the Cross)
In the name of the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit. Amen.
After prayer, set-up two chairs and have one parent pretend to be the Priest as the child comes up to practice going to Confession. Use the How to Go Confession Handout linked HERE. Then, have the child complete the “Confession Reflection” Activity on page 160. Parents should share their answers as well.
Families, together read through pages 161-165. The questions at the end of each page are to be shared in the discussion questions portion below.
After reading pages 161-165, together answer the Check Your Understanding questions in the book on pages 166-167.
Discussion Questions:
Activity:
Student: Complete the “Examination of Conscience” Activity on page 170. Share with your parents which commandment is hard to follow. The commandments are listed on page 54 for reference.
Closing Prayer:
Together, pray the prayer on page 171. (Remember to do the Sign of the Cross before beginning to read the prayer and then again at the end).
End the gathering by offering a sign of peace (& a hug) to one another.
DON’T FORGET to fill out the Family Gathering Form below with a photo of the family working on the lesson. Completing the form is mandatory and counts towards your attendance.
