RENEWED: SECTION 4.2

To be completed by April 27, 2025

Before beginning, make sure to set a prayer space for your family gatherings. Set a space that encourages the family to sit close together so that it’s easier to have meaningful  conversations and prayer time as a family. It’s a good idea to have sacramental objects out, such as, rosaries, holy water, medals, statues, images of Jesus and the Virgin Mary, Bible, Cross, etc.

1. GATHER (Opening)

Family Time:

Today we will learn more about the seven sacraments. We will look carefully at the Sacraments of Initiation and Healing. These sacraments help us be who we were created to be!

Before prayer, take time for some family fun to play “This Person or This Person”

Directions:

Pick two people, mom and dad, brother and sister, etc. Have them sit up front facing everyone. Everyone else sits in front of them.

As questions are read, have each member answer by pointing to the person on the left or to the person on the right.

Suggested Questions: (Number of questions per pair is up to you). HAVE FUN!

  1. Who is most likely to want to order take out for dinner?
  2. Who is most likely to spend all their money on one shopping trip?
  3. Who is most likely to eat pizza for breakfast?
  4. Who is most likely to want to visit a haunted house?
  5. Who is most likely to go skydiving?
  6. Who is most likely to cry while watching a movie?
  7. Who is most likely to become the next President?
  8. Who is most likely to win a dance-off?
  9. Who is most likely to say I love you or give lots of hugs?
  10. Who is most likely to burp in front of others?
  11. Who is the most likely to have the messiest room?
  12. Who is the most likely to pray for others?
  13. Who is the most likely to love roller coasters?
  14. Who is the most likely to stay in their PJ’s all day?
  15. Who is the most likely to want to get to Mass on time?
  16. Who is the most likely to become a famous actor or musician?
  17. Who is the most likely to try new foods?
  18. Who is the most likely to sleep with their stuffed animal?
  19. Who is the most likely to sing loud in front of others?
  20. Who is the most likely to share about Jesus to others?

Opening Prayer:

(Together, make the sign of the Cross) In the name of the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Parent: Close your eyes and take a moment to think of someone you want to pray for. (Pause)

Together, let us pray:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name;

thy kingdom come, they will be done

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Amen.

2. PROCLAIM (Teaching)

Families, together read through pages 115-119 together before watching the video. Questions at the end of each page are to be shared in the discussion questions portion below.

As a family, watch video Section 4. CLICK HERE for the video.

After reading pages 115-119 and watching the video, together answer the Check Your Understanding questions in the book on pages 120-121.

3. BREAK (Break It Open)

Discussion Questions:

(Make sure to go around the room so everyone can share their answer).

  1. Why is it important to be baptized?
  2. What are the 3 Sacraments of Initiation?
  3. Who should receive the anointing of the sick? How does it help them?
  4. Name the two sacraments that give people special graces to serve God.

Activity:

Together, complete the “Sacrament Categories” Activity on page 124.

4. SEND (Living It Out)

Closing Prayer:

Close in prayer by having everyone read together on page 125. (Remember to do the Sign of the Cross before beginning to read the prayer and then again at the end).

End the gathering by offering a sign of peace (and a hug) to one another.

DON’T FORGET to fill out the Family Gathering Form below with a photo of the family working on the lesson. Completing the form is mandatory and counts towards your attendance.
