YEAR 1 - SECTION 3.2

Section 3.2 to be completed by 3/24/24

Before beginning, make sure to set a prayer space for your family gatherings. Set a space that encourages the family to sit close together so that it’s easier to have meaningful  conversations and prayer time as a family. It’s a good idea to have sacramental objects out, such as, rosaries, holy water, medals, statues, images of Jesus and the Virgin Mary, Bible, Cross, etc.

1. GATHER (Opening)

Before starting this lesson,

  • Set a row of kitchen or dining room chairs; one for each member of the family.
  • Gather a large basin which could be a large serving bowl, pot, or a plastic storage container.
  • Gather a pitcher or vase filled with water.
  • Gather a stack of towels, one for each member of the family.

Family Huddle: Go around and have each member share their answers to following questions:

  1. What do you like the most about going to Mass?
  2. What do you dislike or struggle with when going to Mass?

Affirmation: Each student will stand and repeat the following:

  • I am loved and lovable. I am capable of doing hard things.
  • I will choose joy in good and bad times because no matter what, God is with me.
  •  I know in my heart that God loves me and He wants the very best for me, always!

Prayer: Refer to the book Pg. 93 for opening prayer

2. PROCLAIM (Teaching)

As a family, watch video lesson 3.2 from Fr. Andrew:

(Families are encouraged to read through pages 96-99 but it is not required. The video covers the main points of this section.)

After watching the video, answer the Check Your Understanding questions in the book on page 105.

3. BREAK (Break It Open)

Family Foot Washing

Jesus washed the feet of His disciples in a spirit of love, humility, and service.

Today, as a family we will wash each other's feet so that we can love one another as Christ perfectly loves us.

Parents/Guardians will decide how to begin and who will wash each others feet. Resist the urge to rush through the process. Be intentional and take your time.

Whoever is doing the foot washing should say the following:

“I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so also you should love one another.”

Discussion Questions:

  1. What does it feel like to have someone do something so loving (like washing your feet) for you?
  2. How do you think the Disciples felt when Jesus washed their feet?
  3. How can you show someone we love them?

4. SEND (Living It Out)

Closing prayer - Close in prayer by having everyone read together on page 107.

(Remember to do the Sign of the Cross before beginning to read the prayer and then again at the end).

End the gathering by offering a sign of peace (and a hug) to one another.
