Before beginning, make sure to set a prayer space for your family gatherings. Set a space that encourages the family to sit close together so that it’s easier to have meaningful conversations and prayer time as a family. It’s a good idea to have sacramental objects out, such as, rosaries, holy water, medals, statues, images of Jesus and the Virgin Mary, Bible, Cross, etc.
Family Time:
Today we will learn about the Church. We will learn where it came from and how it leads us to Jesus. We go to church to pray, worship, and learn. The Church helps us to know and love God. Note: Parents, have a photo of your child’s baptism handy.
Before prayer: Student, complete the “Welcomed by Jesus” Activity on page 82. When you’ve completed the activity on page 82, have the student share the thoughts they wrote. Have the rest of the group share their answers. What do you think Jesus would say to you? What would you say to him?
Opening Prayer:
(Together, make the sign of the Cross) In the name of the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Parent: Close your eyes and take a moment to think of someone you want to pray for. (Pause)
Together, let us pray:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come, they will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Amen.
Families, together read through pages 83-87 before watching the video. Questions at the end of each page are to be shared in the discussion questions portion below.
As a family, watch video Section 3. CLICK HERE for the video. Start at minute 4:22.
After reading pages 83-87 and watching the video, together answer the Check Your Understanding questions in the book on pages 88-89.
Discussion Questions:
(Make sure to go around the room so everyone can share their answer).
Closing Prayer:
Close in prayer by having everyone read together on page 93. (Remember to do the Sign of the Cross before beginning to read the prayer and then again at the end).
End the gathering by offering a sign of peace (and a hug) to one another.
Challenge: Students, draw a photo of our Church, St. Pancratius and as a family write down what you love about your Church. Bring it with you next time we meet.
DON’T FORGET to fill out the Family Gathering Form below with a photo of the family working on the lesson. Completing the form is mandatory and counts towards your attendance.
